Andrey Poletaev is an internationally published fine artist and one of the leading figures in the contemporary revival of ballpoint pen art as a serious fine art medium. Working exclusively by hand, he creates exquisitely detailed monochrome drawings in ballpoint pen and graphite pencil — two disciplines that demand fundamentally different approaches to mark-making, tone, and precision.

His most celebrated works are executed entirely in ballpoint pen, with individual pieces requiring in excess of 300 hours and up to twenty meticulous layers of ink. In ballpoint pen, there is no erasing, no revision, no second chance — a single misplaced mark on a work representing hundreds of hours of sustained precision irrevocably destroys the piece. His graphite works bring the same uncompromising standard of detail to a medium that rewards an entirely different order of patience and observational discipline.

His portraiture and cityscape works achieve a precision that reads as photorealistic, while his imaginative and mechanical series — including the celebrated Art Mechanica body of work — explore the same technical mastery in an entirely invented visual language. Each work, regardless of medium or subject, is a unique, irreproducible original: no editions, no digital assistance, no shortcuts of any kind. It is this absolute commitment to craft, sustained across decades of disciplined practice, that has drawn sustained international recognition across six languages of press coverage, institutional exhibition, and acquisition by collectors across three continents.
